Improving Algorithm Transparency to Reduce AI Data Bias in Healthcare

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize healthcare systems by providing rapid, systematic diagnoses and decision support for personalized care journeys. However, the use of AI in healthcare can also raise ethical concerns, specifically on the issue of data bias.

Data bias occurs when the data used to train an AI model is not representative of the population it intends to target. When this happens, patients don’t always get the care they need, and doctors may make decisions about interventions that won’t lead to improved health outcomes.

Though this may be true in certain circumstances, there are many ways to manage how AI models are built and optimized to reduce bias regarding social determinants of health (SDoH) such as race, socioeconomic status, gender, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and more. 

How Algorithmic Bias and Inequities Can Arise 

Data bias occurs in various stages during the AI development and implementation process including: 

Data collection: If data is not collected in a representative or unbiased manner, for example, predominantly from one particular racial or ethnic group, the model may be biased towards that demographic and may not perform as well for other demographics. 

Data itself: Issues arise when data reflects societal biases or prejudices. Specifically, data on healthcare outcomes may be biased if it reflects inequality in access to healthcare for certain groups of people.

Algorithms: Algorithms used to analyze the data can also create data bias. Algorithms may not be effective if they are not designed to minimize bias or are not tested for fairness.

Pre-existing biases: If trained on data that reflects societal biases, AI systems may perpetuate these pre-existing biases. An example of this might be if the system is trained on data that reflects gender stereotypes, it may produce biased results when making predictions or recommendations.

Why Diverse, Explainable Algorithms Matter

Transparency and explainability of AI algorithms are essential for eliminating bias as value-based care becomes more widely adopted. AI has the potential to revolutionize value-based care, but if algorithms are wrong or biased, the issues that value-based care is trying to solve could become worse. 

In addition, explainable algorithms are imperative for building trust between healthcare organizations and patients. We can increase confidence in the accuracy and fairness of AI algorithms by providing clear explanations of how they make decisions. 

By providing clear explanations of the reasoning behind recommendations or predictions, we can gain a better understanding of the potential risks and benefits of different treatments and interventions.
